I will be posting the full assignment overviews, requirements, and rubrics.
Check ins
Check ins are due every week by 11:59pm Thursday evening on Blackboard starting the first week of class. These weekly check ins are just a way for you to engage and participant with me the course, and its material outside of the lectures and activities. Check ins can be as simple as two thoughts or questions you have about the class or they can be lengthy and complex entries where you grapple with the course content or larger ideas raised in class connected to your own life. All I ask in these is that you present two separate thoughts somehow related to the class or its content. Each check in is worth 3 points and there are 15 making a total of 45 points or 15% of your course grade. Here’s a list of some of the things you can do with these check in questions but do not feel limited to just these things.
- Two thoughts or questions about the weeks readings
- Two thoughts or questions connecting the weeks readings to weeks prior
- Two thoughts or questions about the weeks lectures
- Two thoughts or questions about the weeks activities
- Two points giving me feedback on my teaching
- Two points giving feedback about the class
- Two thoughts or questions about some current event somehow related to the course content
- Thoughts or questions about the upcoming assignments
Please note if you would like me to respond to your check in question write RESPOND in the subject line.
Assignment 1
For assignment 1 there is an option between two prompts! Please use whatever medium you would like in order to answer the prompt. This means you are free to write an essay (5 pages max), create presentation, audio recording, video recording, create a website/webpage, write a story, schedule time in office hours to present on the topic, some combination, or something not listed! The important thing is that you speak to all the required aspects clearly and fully. For all word/PDF/PowerPoint/Link-based files feel free to upload to blackboard. Now that you’ve demonstrated an understanding of identities, communities, power, privilege, and oppression. I want you to focus on defining communities and understanding ethics/ethical frameworks. Feel free to use some of what you’ve already written/discussed/shown to help with this assignment. These prompts are much more similar than the previous assignment as we are nearing the final. For those of you who might not have chosen a community issue just yet prompt 1 provides you with an issue to discuss. For those of you who do have a community issue in mind prompt 2 allows your to begin to define your project.

The Final
This final will ask you to put together all that you have learned throughout the semester to create a research proposal. This research proposal will be addressing a community issue of your choosing. You will give background on the issue, discuss why and how you came to be interested in this issue, discuss community involvement, outline some important aspects of your ethical framework, talk about methods, talk about challenges, tell me how you plan to analyze the data, and finally give a brief picture on what you plan to see. Like always the format of this final is open. However there is a new option to present in front of the class if you would like to share your thoughts and work with your fellow students. If you choose an in class presentation, please ensure 10 minutes total (8 minutes for presentation 2 minutes for questions). There are also a few benefits from selecting this option.
- 1. My feedback will be much more thorough.
- 2. You will receive this feedback in an email from me that same day which contains your final grade AND your approx. overall course grade so you won’t have to worry about the class anymore.
- 3. If you miss any aspects of the prompt I will ask you a question about it allowing you space to correct any mistakes right then and there so you won’t lose points.
*** Presentation option DUE by final classes on 5/10 or 5/12***
*** All other Finals Due 5/17 by 11:59pm***
